An exhibition at ClimArte Gallery in Melbourne bringing together works that speak to the idea of solastalgia. In 2007 Professor Glenn Albrecht proposed the word solastalgia to describe environmentally induced distress. The word is derived from solace and nostalgia, the recognised components of emotional response to dramatic change in the environment, landscape, and home. In 2022 this concept is more broadly understood. The intent in this show is to bring to the fore human need for the earthy, the solace and comfort which we often unknowingly absorb from the natural around us; the sky, clouds, air, sounds, colours, textures, of dirt and leaf litter. All of which is subject to weathering, to dissolving and disappearing. Finding the natural order in this cycle is multi-faceted, demanding consideration beyond the rational and scientific.  The works in this show remind us of the felt world, and beckon us to allow and perhaps reveal the emotional, the cultural, and spiritual aspects of human life.
